The ISS is an international institute of higher education on social and economic change with a focus on development processes. It was founded by the Dutch universities to assist in the training and further education of professionals, especially from developing countries.

The Institutes academic staff represents an exceptional range of experience and theoretical interests. Over 10,000 students from more than 160 countries have studied at the Institute.

The ISS is one of the five international education institutes of the Netherlands, each focusing on a different scientific field. The other four are: the IHE, IHS, ITC and the MSM.

The ISS is affiliated to FION and SAIL, umbrella organisations that represent thirteen international education institutes in The Netherlands.

The ISS forms part of the Dutch academic scene. There are close ties through participation in the research (PhD-) school CERES, through appointments of Professors at other universities and joint teaching programmes. ISS has a special partnership relation with Utrecht University which acts as the liaison of the ISS with the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences.

The ISS provides top-quality education in the social sciences to postgraduate, mid-career professionals, mostly from developing countries and countries in transition. Courses - all taught in English - provide knowledge and insights in a number of fields including economics, sociology, political science, public administration and international law.

The ISS' Centre for the Study of Transition and Development (CESTRAD) is a specialised unit for research, policy analysis and training, on the economics and politics of transition. CESTRAD is a platform for policy analysts and researchers, from government agencies and civil society organisations in transition and OECD countries.

The international Centre for Child and Youth Studies (iCCYS) is a specialised unit for training, research and policy analysis, established at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague and International Child Development Initiatives (ICDI) in nearby Leiden.

The ISS works with and for a multicultural community, in a critical and pluralistic, interdisciplinary and comparative approach based on a rich experience with development and transition processes. The ISS aims at widening civil participation in the process towards just and sustainable development in the context of global change.

The ISS maintains close partnerships with academic institutes in various developing and transition countries. They form a global network of like-minded centres, which undertake joint activities in teaching, research, and policy analysis.

In India ISS has partnership with Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, Kerala; and Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi and through IDPAD.

ISS has also an Alumni Association in India. The address is:
