As from November 1996, the steering group Islam and Citizenship has been engaged in the relationship between norms, values and citizenship and the role islamic organisations can play in this issue. The objective of the steering group is to stimulate the social debate within the muslim community and broaden it, where relevant, to Dutch society as a whole.

After an intrinsic preparation concerning this theme, the steering group reached the conclusion that, in order to initiate the social debate, a programme aimed towards this goal ought to be started up. In consultation with the ministry of Justice, the steering group has therefore realized this project.

The project of Islam & Citizenship has the purpose of stimulating the debate on the interpretation of the concept of citizenship within the muslim community. Starting point of this purpose is the fact that Islam is a rich source of norms and values that can be used by muslims to stimulate integration in Dutch society and to further shape the concept of citizenship. The emphasis in this process is put on shared norms and values.

The project is being supported by the ministry of Justice. By stimulating this development, the ministry wishes to - among other issues - contribute to - aside from a progressing awareness among muslims on the various aspects of citizenship - productive co-operation between the various muslim organisations at a local level, local government and other social institutions.

The project is an initiative of members of the various muslim organisations in the Netherlands and is realized under the management of a steering group. For the execution of the project, a coordinator has been appointed. He is supported by a project assistant.
