Ashok Bhadra, who is from West Bengal, studied arts in Jamshedpur and sculpture in Baroda, India, and later worked in the film industry in Mumbai. Among the many awards he has received for his sculpture are the All India Fine Arts and Craft Society award and the Gujarat state Lalit Kala Academy award.

In 1991, he was invited by the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam to work on a special project and has lived in the Netherlands since.

In Gallery Ashok, his studio-cum-workshop in Amsterdam, he uses wood and traditional Japanes techniques and paper to design and produce exclusive lamps and small items of furniture. Hand-crafted in Ashok's workshop as unique pieces or in limited series, these are elegant pieces which blend traditional Japanese lamp-making with modern stylistic influences.

Ashok also designs lamps and furniture for private homes, restaurants, offices and other spaces, including a series of monumental lamps for the Amsterdam Okura hotel.

Gallery Ashok also organises exhibitions of contemporary Indian, Japanese, and Dutch artists.

Gallery Ashok is usually open on Saturdays, and Sundays between 13.30 and 18.30. For a private appointment on these or other days of the week, please contact Ashok by email or telephone.
