Established in 1976 by Milland and Linda Fuller of Alabama, USA, Habitat for Humanity is an international nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization which builds simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 175, 000 houses, providing shelter for nearly 900,000 people worldwide. It is active in 100 countries and builds a house every 26 minutes.
Local Habitat affiliates coordinate house building and select partner families. Habitat houses are purchased by the homeowner families. Three factors make the houses affordable to low-income people worldwide:
- Houses are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage
- Homeowners and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision
- Individuals, corporations, faith groups and others provide financial support
HFH Netherlands was founded in April 1993. Unlike national organizations that coordinate house building, its primary goals are to raise funds for diverse overseas projects and to recruit volunteers for either short- or long-term durations for Habitat's work worldwide. HFH Netherlands is focused on resource development with private individuals, corporations and organizations and the development of International Service Teams and corporate teams originating from the small country. It serves as a model for other countries of northwestern Europe.
Habitat for Humanity is also active in India. The first Habitat for Humanity affiliate in India was founded in Khammam, Andhra Pradesh, in 1983. Since then, several additional affiliates have been formed and more than 1,000 houses have been built. HFH India builds houses that are approximately 350 square feet, with at least two rooms and a latrine. House designs vary, depending on materials common to the area and the specific needs of the local community.
