The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) is a postdoctoral research centre based in Leiden and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Its main objective is to encourage the study of Asia from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective and to promote national and international cooperation in this field. The institute focuses on the humanities and social sciences and, where relevant, on their interaction with other sciences.

The geographical scope of the institute covers South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Central Asia. The institute focuses on the humanities and the social sciences and, where relevant, on their interaction with other sciences. English is the official language at the IIAS.

The IIAS organizes seminars, workshops and conferences, publishes a newsletter (circulation approximately 20,000 copies) and has set up various academic publication series. It has established a database which contains information about researchers and academic institutes in the field of Asian Studies within Europe and world-wide.

The Institute furthermore plays a facilitating role by bringing (inter)national parties together. The IIAS serves as a clearing-house for knowledge and information. Through its so-called 'Schiphol function' the IIAS establishes contacts between Asianists from all over the world.

The IIAS hosts several categories of postdoctoral researchers (fellows) in Asian Studies. Sponsorship of these fellows contributes to the institute’s aim of enhancing expertise and encouraging the exploration of underdeveloped fields of study.

Since 2001, the IIAS serves as the permanent secretariat for the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS).

The International Institute for Asian Studies is jointly established in 1993 by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UVA) and Universiteit Leiden (LEI). It is mainly financed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences.
