“De Hertjes”(The Deers) is a students’ association belonging to the department of Languages and Cultures of South and Central Asia (Indology) at Leiden University. They organize activities that have a link with South Asia, e.g. celebrating Indian festivals like Diwali and Holi, Indian tea parties, Indian films (every month) and visiting exhibitions. These activities are aimed primarily at the students and staff of the Indology department but are open to anyone with an interest in South Asia. The main event of "de Hertjes" is the “Hertjesmaaltijd”, a festive occasion at which an Indian meal is served for students and staff of the Indology department.
One can become a member at 10 Euros p.a.; members are informed about forthcoming events and pay reduced fees at the activities of De Hertjes.
