The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The UT is the Netherlands' only campus university. The ‘Wireless Campus’ has the largest communications network in Europe, ranking among the fastest in the world. The University of Twente is a young and innovative institute. Among the national educational top, it also holds its own among the best of international universities.
Within the University Twente the Technology and Sustainable Development in North South Perspective is a working group (leerstoel) which provides education at both Bachelors and Masters level on problems related to the role of technology in the development of the South. It also has an extensive research programme relating to governance of technology in the South, and focusing on technology in natural resource management, energy and water. Gender is a cross-cutting theme. In addition to the academic staff, PhD students, mostly from developing countries including India work on these research topics.
