According to information published by the Press Information Bureau, Government of India, there are 949 religious places protected by Archaeological Survey of India where prayer/puja/namaj is held.

These include 11 churches, 237 mosques and 701 temples. This was informed by the former Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr Jagmohan in a reply to a question by Mr P.D. Elangovan and Mr G.M. Banatwalia in Lok Sabha on 21-04-2003.
