Assam and the Seven Sisters - Wildlife Sanctuary

Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary
Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darrang District of Assam and is between the Himalayas and Bhutan  It covers an area of about 26 km2. The government of Assam declared this area as a wild life sanctuary 1n 1980 especially for the protection of the Hispid Hare (Caprolagus hispidusand) Pigmy Hog.

Pigmy Hog or Nal-gahori (Sus salvanis)is the smallest of the pig family and one of the rarest species and were on the brink of extinction. The Hispid hare and the Pigmy hog Sus Salvanius, had been considered extinct until they were both rediscovered in Assam in 1971. The IUCN Red Data Book lists both species as endangered and both are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

To save the pigmy hog through captive breeding Pigs and Peccaries Specialist Group in association with Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust has set up a conservation programme.
