Restricted & Protected Areas and Special Permits

Due to political and security reasons the border districts of India are in general the restricted areas for the foreign tourists. Some of them are are beautiful. To visit these areas special permits are required. Individual tourism is not permitted. Permits are valid for limited number of days. The special permits can be obtained from the Indian Missions abroad or governmental agencies within India. Tourists group may travel on identified tour circuits only.

The following States/Union Territories have been designated as protected areas and a foreign passport holder needs a special permit before they can be visited.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Individual tourists permitted. The duration of stay is 30 days.
Areas that can be visited are:
- Port Blair Municipal Area
- Havelock Island, Long Island
- Neil Island
- Jolly Buoy
- North and South Cinque
- Red Skin
- Entire Island of Middle Andaman, excluding tribal reserve.
  To these places day and night visits are allowed.


- All islands in Mahatma Gandhi Marine national Park
   except Boat, Hobday, Twin Islands, Tarmugli,
   Malay and Pulo Islands.
   Here a night halt is allowed provided special
   permission is obtained from the U.T.
- Entire island of South Andaman, excluding trible
   reserve
- Bastang Island
- Little Andaman Island excluding tribal reserve.
- Mayabunder
- Rangat
- Mt. Harriet
- Madhubaan
- Ross Island|
- Narcondum Island
- Interview Island
- Brother Island
- Sister Island
- Barren island restricted to visit on board vessels
  only with no landing ashore. 
This group of destination only day visit allowed.

Entire island of South Andaman, excluding tribal reserve, Bastang Island, Little Andaman Island excluding tribal reserve where a night halt is allowed and Mount Harriet, Madhuban where only day visits are allowed. Prior permit is necessary.

Arunachal Pradesh
Individual tourists not permitted. The duration of stay is 10 days. Areas that can be visited are:
Itanagar, Ziro, Along, Pasighat, Deporijo, Miao, Namdapha and Taipi Sujusa(Puki) and Bhalikpong

Manipur
Individual tourists not permitted. Maximum duration of stay is 6 days. Areas that can be visited are: 
Loktak Lake, Imphal, Moirang INA memorial, Keibul Deer Sanctury and Waithe Lake Kongjam War Memorial. Recnetly some new circuits are opened up.

Mizoram
Areas that can be visited are:
Vairangte, Thingdawl and Aizawl 

Nagaland

In order to promote tourism in the North-east region, the Government of India has decided to allow foreign tourists to visit Nagaland. Until recently the entire state of Nagaland was a restricted area. However the Government of India has decided to allow foreign tourists to visit the districts of Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchong and Wokha.

Sikkim
Individual tourists permitted. The duration of stay is 15days and +/- 15 days extension can be granted by the State government. Areas that can be visited are:
Gangtok, Rumtek, Phodang,Pamayangtse, Khecheperi and Tashiging

Darjeeling, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura

Lakshadweep Islands
Only Bangaram and Subeli Islands are open to foreign tourists. Permits are required, obtainable from:

Himachal Pradesh
Individual tourists is not permitted.

Areas that can be visited are:
Poo-Khab-Sumdho-Dhankar-Tabo-Gompa-Kaza, Moran-Dabling

Jammu & Kashimir

Uttranchal
Individual tourists is not permitted.
Areas that can be visited are:
Nanda Devi Sanctury, Niti Ghati and Kalindi Khal in Chamoli, Utter Kashi Districts, Adjoining areas of Milam Glacier.
