Every year, teeming millions assemble in Sonepur situated 25 kms from
Patna, to recall the glorious victory of God over Evil.
Sonepur has the legend that this was the actual place where, in
pre-historic times, the fight ended between the lord of the forest and
land Gaj (the elephant) and the lord of water water Grah (the crocodile).
It is one of the biggest fairs of India and the biggest cattle fair
of Asia.
When the Pujas and the ablutions are over, the visitors abandon
themselves to the various attractions offered in and around the sprawling
fair ground, which lasts for a month.
Sonepur Fair is a traditional Hunting Ground for serious and casual
shopper’s alike. The pulsating market here has the widest possible
range of goods.
The area that attracts all, however, is the one where the elephants are
lined up for sale. Sonepur Fair the only one where such a large number
of elephants are sold. These are purchased mainly by forest departments
and people involved with logging operations.
Apart from elephants, a large number of cattle and horses are also
brought to the Fair for the sale.
