Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) was born on the twelfth day of
Rabi-ul-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic Calendar. The Prophet (PBUH)
died anniversary also on the same day.
The word ' barah ' stands for the twelve days of the Prophet's
sickness. During these days, sermons are delivered in mosques, focusing
on the life and deeds of the Prophet.
The twelfth day or the Urs is observed by prayers and alms giving.
Unlike some of the festivals in other major religions, this day is not
a day for celebration. Muslim festivals like Eid-ul Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha
are not related to any significant event in the life of Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH) like his birth or death anniversary.
