Khajuraho Dance Festival - Madhya Pradesh

Every year in March from 6th to 12th , the splendid temples of Khajuraho come alive during the weeklong festival of classical dances. This Dance Festival can be in short called as a rich assembly of classical exponents and expert dancers of various forms, it give the rare chance to witness this musical extravaganza, with the background of the temples of Khajuraho.

This Festival is a cultural festival for the celebration of the Indian arts- dance and music handling down from generation to generation. Different classical dances like Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri etc. are presented during this festival.

Situated in the northernmost part of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is famous for it's enchanting temples and it's legendary Khajuraho dance festival. The name Khajuraho is derived from the Khajur tree (the date palm tree), which is grown abundantly in the region. Sculptured erotically the temples of this place are known all over the world. The sculpture reflects mainly the life, moods and religious faith of that time. The temples are dedicated to Gods and Goddesses like Shiva, Jagadamba and Vishnu. These temples are classified into three groups-the western group, the eastern group, and the southern group. Each group of temples is devoted to the worship of a certain group of God and Godesses.

Between 900-1100 AD, the Chandela dynasty built 85 temples of which 20 remains as embodiments of Indian art and sculptures. In the 10th century Khajuraho art was at its zenith so it's temples are also popularly known as the 10th century temples.

The main idea behind Khajuraho Dance Festival is to make the cultural heritage of Khajuraho relevant to the present society and preserving it for the coming generation.

On this occasion a number of renowned artists and craftsmen participates in the workshop and seminar and present their art to the numerous visitors and tourist. And during this seven days festival, there is also a market in an open field where the visitors can get the entire local made articles of Khajuraho.
