Dehing is a major river and plays an important role in the State's economy. The Dehing flows down from the Patkai mountain range to meet the Brahmaputra at Dehingmukh in Sivasagar district. From time immemorial, both Patkai and Dehing have been contributing their natural resources to the peoples to settle down, grow and develop human colonies of various tribes and groups of different religion, languages etc. in this part of the world. Hence is the name Dehing Patkai Festival.
With the celebration of this festival, the people of the eastern-most corner of the State have found a place to meet and interact among themselves for exchange their views and their traditional customs.
Craft Mela, Food Festival, Cultural Programme for the visitors etc. are some the attractions of this festival. The festival offers also the possibilities for adventure sports in the near by area or a trail into the wilderness. A visit to the tea gardens, the Digboi oil field or a drive up the Stilwell road that once was the passage to the Golden land of Myanmar are some other possibilities. The heritage village set up at the festival venue offers the visitor to know the unique lifestyles of different tribes at one place.
Premier Oil helped the village of Phening to build the first eco-tourism centre in Assam. Premier agreed to sponsor and supervise the construction of this village in collaboration with the Forestry Department making this the first joint venture of its kind in the state of Assam. The eco-tourism village was completed in late December 2005, in time for the annual Dehing Patkai Tribal Festival.
Tinsukia town is well connected by broad gauge railway and the nearest airport is Dibrugarh.
