The Dutch Muslim Broadcasting Corporation (NMO) was founded in 1993 by the Dutch Muslim Council (NMR). The NMR is a multi-ethnic representative of various national and regional muslim organisations in the Netherlands. The NMO is a religious and cultural broadcasting organisation founded to cater for the needs of the entire muslim community in the Netherlands. The NMO is part of the Dutch public television system and broadcasts nationally on channel one in the Netherlands (Nederland 1).
Aims of the NMO
The NMO produces radio and television programmes for a muslim and non-muslim audience. The aim is to
bring about a consciousness which should help improve the position of muslims in Dutch society.
Furthermore, the NMO aims to inform non-muslims about the islam and the lifestyle of muslims.What does the NMO do?
The NMO presents a variety of colourful programmes to its viewers and listeners. In these programmes special attention is paid to:
- religion
- education
- culture
- young muslims
- muslim women
- elderly muslims
- emancipation and integration of muslims
- dialogue with non-muslims
