World Vision was founded in 1950 by Dr Bob Pierce to care for orphans in Asia, World Vision has grown to embrace the larger issues of community development and advocacy for the poor in its mission to help children and their families build sustainable futures.

World Vision is an international Christian relief and development organisation working to promote the well being of all people - especially children. In 2003, World Vision offered support to 100 million people in 99 countries. Working on six continents, World Vision is one of the largest Christian relief and development organisations in the world.

Through emergency relief, education, health care, economic development and promotion of justice, World Vision helps communities help themselves. In India World Vision began its ministry in Kolkata (Calcutta) in 1962. In the early 1970's, it shifted its base from Kolkata to Chennai (Madras). On Februay 25, 1975 World Vision of India was born.

What began as support to children in residential projects expanded over the years into community development projects to cater for a larger section of society. This gave way to a macro development activities through Area Development Programs. World Vision India's key areas of ministry are Area Development Programs, Emergency Relief and Special Initiative Programs.

World Vision India's national headquarters is in Chennai and it works through six zonal offices strategically located around the country.

World vision is active in India with more than 300 proects. World Vision Nederland is also active in India and supports several projects.
