The Tropenmuseum is one of the two largest anthropological museums in the Netherlands. Visitors are attracted through realistic reconstructions of local environments and attractive and educational displays of exhibits drawn from the museums huge collections.
The mission of the Tropenmuseum is to promote and expand knowledge and mutual understanding between western and non-western cultures. The identity of the Tropenmuseum is rooted in a mix of ethnology, various religious systems, folk and popular art, classical art, arts and crafts, history and exotics.
The beautiful and historic building in which the Tropenmuseum is housed provides space for several permanent exhibitions e.g. the new section 'Eastbound' that focuses on Dutch colonialism in Indonesia, and an ongoing series of temporary exhibitions including photographic work.
A separate section is the Tropenmuseum Junior with special programmes for children between 6 and 12 years of age.
