As an independent international financial institution, Triodos Bank seeks to bring substance to ethical and social banking. In particular, Triodos finances enterprises which add social, environmental and cultural value, with the support of depositors and investors who wish to encourage the development of responsible business working for social renewal.

Social and ethical - as well as financial - perspectives are at the heart of Triodos' business practices. This threefold approach is the source of the name Triodos 'tri hodos' which means 'threefold way'. An integrative approach has been fundamental to the Bank since it was established in 1980. Triodos Bank is a leading innovator in sustainable banking.

Since 1990 Triodos has become an active fund manager, both for funds, set up by Triodos Bank itself and for third parties, such as charities, donor organizations and the Government.

Some of these funds include:
Microfinance and Fair Trade, Triodos Renewable Energy for Development Fund, and Triodos Venture Capital Fund. Fair trade funds include: Hivos Triodos Fund (HTF), Triodos-Doen and Triodos Fair Share Fund which support fair trade and organic agriculture and provide short term, transaction based finance to producer organizations in developing countries or Central and Eastern Europe to enable them to export their products directly and at a fair price.

HTF together with the American Investment company Gray Ghost and an Indian partner started the Bellwether Fund with an investment capital US$ 10 million. This is the first investment fund in India providing risc-capital to Microcredit financiers. The Bellweather Fund has already financed a small company in New Delhi which in turn gives microcredit to buy Rickshaws.
